Gordon Brown Again

I am indebted to Andrew Rawnsley - here for telling me what went on in the car the PM and the Chancellor shared last week:

"The Prime Minister tried to engage the Chancellor in conversation. I'm told that Mr Brown responded by taking out some papers and burying himself behind them, refusing to reply to every overture until Mr Blair finally gave up trying to make conversation. The journey passed in a bitter silence."

Well, it's good to know our leader-in-waiting is so assiduously pursuing the best interests of the country and not throwing stupid sulks or anything infantile like that. And, while we are on the subject, does anybody know anybody who admires, likes or can even stand the sight of Gordon Brown? His continued presence in the public realm is, indeed, a mystery.

  1. That Gordon Brown should be surly and childish in his dealings with the PM is, to me, unsurprising - like sibling rivalry, the big, charmless brother scorning the eager-to-please young tyke whose personality (and/or acting talents) has led to him racing ahead in the winning friends and influencing people stakes. But it also seems entirely fitting, when most of the population these days has absolutely no idea how to behave, either publicly or privately, that our PM-in-waiting should conduct himself like an unsophisticated, barn-raised thug. 3. i like Gordon Brown precisely because he's such a dour, joyless peasant. After years of Blair's manic, demonic grin, a scowling Eeyore is quite to my taste. This is, clearly, a man who would pistol-whip dissidents in public; a man who would go ten rounds of bare-knuckle boxing with John Prescott in a car park at night, stripped to the waist, fortified by sailor's rum.
