They can charge what they want, the FT do on older articles and they are all available from other sources, as too the economist. (anyways just download "evernote" and you can keep them yourself, superb for referencing btw)

The problems at the moment is that newspapers like any other special interest groups will cosy up to mother government for protection and as such are part of the corporatist culture that devalue your politics.
