In The Sunday Times: my interview with the engaged and engaging Egyptian novelist and dentist Alaa Al Aswany.

  1. "America has been paying Mr Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban for years, and supporting the Saudi regime, which is distributing these kinds of ideas for years.”

These kind of ideas being the attempts to radicalise Islam. What a world of lies and propaganda we inhabit.
The old Greek idea that one must engage in politics that he mentions is something I'd have retreated from with most of the fibres of my being not too long ago, but I'd now have to agree with. Though in my own case, politics meant in a very broad sense.

  4. Bryan,

were you following me? I just arrive back from holiday in Egypt (and being without internet for two weeks!) when you post this piece!

I will reassess my fresh impression through the new lens. Thank you

  5. Yes, Rebel, I may as well come clean. I am psychic. Helps a lot in my trade. Uncomfortable for him, Susan, a rather strained posture while seated.

  6. By engaging in politics, Neil, doesn't necessarily stretch to ever voting...We're probably talking in a very broad sense.

  7. Not to vote at all is a sin (a secular sin).

  8. Well, I admit I do tend to vote, though prsumably with reluctance and a sense of futility. I say presumably because the experience of voting hasn't left a strong enough mark for me to recall what it ever feels like.
