Burn This Book
Scanning a publisher's catalogue, as I do, I come across Three Lions: The Unofficial Story of the England Football Team Since 1966 by Brian Beard to be published in April. The blurb announces, 'Published for Euro 2008; the ultimate fan's guide...' etc.. As I recall, The Worst Football Team in the World now stands little chance of qualifying for Euro 2008. This book, I fear, will only pour more salt in the wound and send Frank Lampard back to his cognitive therapist.

Never known a nation so mad about football, and so little qualified to participate in it!
ReplyDeleteBut for the rest of the time they love what they do: Indeed, it strikes me as a profoundly poignant incongruity that, once the material of Empire and the essence of conquest, now dumbed down into a consumer culture with no real sense of its own purpose, there appears to be an entire class of people whose historical objective has been reduced to getting habitually drunk and beating each other up.
Thr Russian hooligans apparently model themselvs on ours- down to the Millwall designer knockoffs- but are infintely worse with the odd grenade being tossed. Dioes this proved dreamy's point? Just being hopeful of course.
ReplyDeleteDoes this prove Dreamy's point?
ReplyDeleteIt proves that we have put ourselves at the head of the ideas of our time!

ReplyDeleteThis is a modern phenonomen? I think not.
And what do you mean "reduced", Selena? 'Tis a noble calling.
ReplyDeleteBryan, I don't think we'll get off so lightly. The Russians will draw with Israel and the Worst Team in the World will scrape through to torture us another day.
No, say it isn't so, Brit!
