The England Caption
But I am, as you now, a man of sunny disposition and so here is a picture of Salthouse Church, one of England's finest interiors. Any future England manager should be required to make his team sit quietly in here for at least eight hours.

ReplyDeleteYou mean he went out, on a freezing winter day, at 11.30 in the morning, and photographed a church? Fair makes yer proud to be an Englishman.
ReplyDeleteActually, this is sublime. So glad to have seen it.
Well it would be one of the finest interiors if it had been left in its original, pre-reformation state: painted and full of life, not Tudor/Puritan minimalism.
ReplyDeleteOoops, seem to have mounted my hobby horse there.
Good point, Recusant, but, in this case, I'm not sure I agree. Salthouse is a very pure architectural effect and the pure look probably works better.

ReplyDeleteMore about this fine building here.
ReplyDeleteAdd another to my list of places to see. Thanks to you, Bryan, our scheduled two-week jaunt has already become a month in the country. (As you pointed out, Bryan, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales deserve more than the drive-by I was considering due to lack of time.) At this rate, we'll be relocating for the summer. Nice idea, but not in the cards.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely building. Nige, thanks for the link to its history.
ReplyDeleteI like its clean lines and simplicity, Recusant. I have a hard time imagining that interior brightly painted -- it would look like a young girl wearing makeup. I.e., slutty somehow.
It's our Thanksgiving today here in the U.S. We shall roast our turkeys and sweet potatoes and think fondly of the Puritans.....
During England team's eight hours of quietude, Vicar of Salthouse informs players "In God's house there are many mansions", to which Rio and Wayne reply "If they've got full-size snooker tables and six car garages, we're interested!"
ReplyDeleteDurham Cathedral (i'm told) was once brightly-painted, and was often akin to a market place, as well as having at times served as a barracks and a prison.
ReplyDeleteIts present sobriety, all greys and gloom, suits it very well. But now very few people visit it (it's usually almost deserted), so bright colours would be incongruous, like an old slapper with her lipstick & wig on.
