Cricket
England cricketers now indulge in a group hug when taking to the field. This is not, well, cricket. Cricket is when the players skulk out locked in their private hells, struggling with their demons, muttering, sometimes weeping, always smouldering with resentment. It makes for a better game.

Indeed, this is of little comfort to a player with ambition, and football is in similar decline...

ReplyDeleteThe other night, Debbie and I were driving to the Mann Music Center and there, in Fairmount Park, a group of black people was playing cricket. I think it's the first time I've ever seen the game live. I presume the players were from Jamaica or some other former British colony. So come to Philadelphia, Bryan. There's definitely cricket to be seen.
ReplyDeleteI'm an American and don't watch Cricket very much but this post reminded me of baseball players walking off the field. It's much better when a pitcher has a great inning and then trots off solemnly.

ReplyDeleteThe between-innings tea if we were batting second was an early introduction to tormented isolation that stood me in no good stead whatsoever.
Just wait until Madonna gets around to dating cricket players. By my calculations she'll do baseball until the playoffs, switch to football until the Superbowl, then pick up with cricket during the slow season between Superbowl an spring training.
