The Confession of Supremely Wisegood

Dickens was right - people do have names that reflect their character/place in the world. The moral climax of this crisis - not just funny money, no money - centres on a man named Bernie Madoff (made off - geddit?). And, meanwhile, somebody called Anurag Dikshit has been fined $300 million dollars for running illegal internet gambling. Years ago I changed my name from Supremely Wisegood, it was just too obvious.

  1. Nominative determinism surely predicts great things ahead for this young man.

  2. I agree Supremely. Why my middle name is Ruth and I could never be totally Ruthless.

  3. 'yard' is cognate with 'jera', a Futhark rune, a good rune, actually - it stands at the centre, it is the wheel around which things turn. It's mainly to do with a bond with nature, fertility, and the cycles of time:

The link includes the line: "Deadlines bring out the best in us and motivate us to grow to levels beyond our present ability."

Apple reinforces the rune's association with 'harvest' - so 'Appleyard' is a most auspicious name for a traditionalist and nature-lover.

  4. I had a butch hockey teacher called Susan Spanner. I could never work out how this name might be related to sporting endeavours, but felt that it ought to be.

  5. Sophie, I had a scary butch gym teacher named "Mrs. Breed." She used to like to watch us girls take showers, which caused me to stop taking them. Very creepy. I think the "Mrs." was an add-on.

As for names, I'm currently reading Wu Ch'Eng-En's "Monkey" and I think Bryan should call himself "Sage, the Equal of Heaven."

It's all about the quest for immortality, too; right up Mr. Appleyard's alley.

  7. God, I hope not. She looks like Billy Idol looks *now* -- only, a female. Very, very creepy. And she definitely did NOT want to be dancing with herself.

  8. Yep, that's me all right.
