Pity the Poor Banker
I see - so our banks fell for a pyramid selling scheme. Is anybody anywhere ever going to believe a word a banker says? They do seem to be the most pathetic creatures.

Its seems I have been working two days a month for most of my life to support gamblers. I might as well have subbed a poker player as paid into a pension scheme.
ReplyDeleteWonder if her Maj will offer some words of comfort to our broke bankers in her xmas telly address?
ReplyDeleteShe has experience of annis horribilis as well as coutts owner RBS
To be fair, there seemed little reason to distrust Madoff. You could enter into a relationship thinking, "He doesn't need my money, but he needs his reputation." That's about as much assurance as you could ask for in a private deal.
ReplyDeleteOn a slightly related note, I think this letter (wether true or not) should be made a part of the curriculum of all business schools!
ReplyDeleteAndrew Lahde's letter
Is it wise to deal in such generalities? One wouldn't conclude from the shortcomings of some of your fellow professionals, for example Bryan, that journalists were clueless halfwits that invariably haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
ReplyDeleteOh well, I expect in the UK Mr Madoff would immediately have been dubbed "The Colonel". All criminal masterminds in the UK seem to be called The Colonel. It's hard to believe that an organized fraud this big and which ran for so long never aroused suspicion, but if anyone was suspicious they kept jolly quiet about it.
