The Difference between Television and Radio
Somebody says to me- 'Television distracts you from what you're not doing; radio distracts you from what you are doing.' This sound good but is it right?

radio only distracts me when the content is more interesting than what I'm doing whereas television is just irritating.
ReplyDeleteRadio dulls the pain of driving. Television is the modern equivalent of the stocks. Mime the pelting of veg.
ReplyDeleteIt does sound good, but I think I would have put it the other way about.
ReplyDeleteYou tend to put the radio on when you're trying to do something, and it sometimes distracts, whereas television lends itself better to accompanying the vegetative state.
If you can accept that in a virtual world, we will long for reality even more, radio, tuned to the right non-musical station, does have that down-home analogue ability to draw you in and, if the content is good, get it's leg across and seduce you, whilst at the same time liberating your imagination. The actual sound of radio seems less combative than TV too, and certainly less likely to be trying to sell you something, trying to be in your face at every opportunity. I agree with Brit that TV is a better companion for the 'vegetative state' because, if you feel a maris piper moment coming on, and the big hand is on six, an hour of Loose Women will deepen the coma every time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm not snobbish about TV though. An awful lot of the interesting things I've learnt and great entertainment I've had has come from TV.
ReplyDeleteSure most TV is rubbish, but so are most books.
I dont even remember how i reached your site but it doesnt matter, cause i’m so happy i found it, it really made me think, keep up the good work
