Careless Pork

It's gratifying to see that the latest nonsense on cancer, booze, meat, etc is being greeted by the press with due scepticism - and, in the case of The Sun, downright mockery. Today's paper (not the online edition alas) carries the inspired headline Careless Pork Costs Lives. This is all in refreshing contrast to the ever worthy, ever credulous, ever minatory BBC, which led its bulletins with the supposed alcolhol-cancer link - despite the fact that obesity-cancer is the story, inasmuch as there is one. Hats off to Her Majesty's Press!

  1. Yes, one can imagine the Elizabethan BBC leading with a health scare about ye salte porke on board Her Majestie's Ships, the reporter expiring from a gross surfeit of lentil bake before he could pass on that trivial snippet about Drake, Raleigh and co seeing off the Spanish Armada.

  3. My sister-in-law was one of the authors of the recent "obesogenic" report. Funnily enough, we don't see eye-to-eye on a number of issues, but surely even she cannot fail to be amused by the Sun's latest effort. I might buy her a copy and take it round this evening while at the same time smuggling in a pork pie for my brother.

  4. I think there should be a song, along the lines of George Michael and Wham's "Careless Whisper" -- "Careless Porker." I'm too tired from wrestling with the fractious spirit of Ralph Waldo Ellison to do the parodied lyrics myself, but I betcha Ian or another of you witty Brits can crackle the corkscrew queue to a turn.
