CNN's Living Golf and Dead Football
Waking horribly early, I turn on CNN to check how things are going end of the worldwise. It turns out there is a show called Living Golf - well, it made me laugh. Also they did something about football - real football, guys. No matter how enthusiastic or informed they may be, Americans cannot talk about 'soccer' convincingly. They probably lack the psychic hinterland of fatigue, irony and suffering.

A blog about, among other things, imaginary ideas - What ifs? and Imagine thats. What if photographs looked nothing like what we see with our eyes? Imagine that the Berlin Wall had never come down. What if we were the punchline of an interminable joke? All contributions welcome.
Yes, it's very strange watching Americans analyse football.
ReplyDeleteThey don't get that it's fluid, and seem to think that a football match is composed of deliberate 'plays'.

ReplyDeleteProbably for the same reasons we cannot appreciate English cuisine or German poetry or Swedish literature.
If you just got rid of the goals you'd have a perfect game. It would be all free flowing fluidity, irony and ennui, without the annoying hint of objective, intent or accomplishment.
