Burchill to Seek God
So Julie Burchill is to leave journalism to spend more time with her theology. It's a pity, she made me laugh, she was consolingly weird and she was, in spite of everything, a good thing, as I tried to explain in the New Statesman in 1998.

Heh - only you could find Julie Burchill 'consoling', Bryan.
ReplyDeleteI've generally found her deeply cringeworthy, I'm afraid. A perpetual adolescent looking for an orthodoxy to rebel against (so God was a natural step).
Like Christopher Hitchens. What's the meaning of him?
ReplyDeleteHe smoke a lot, captain, that may be a clue.
ReplyDeleteThe thought was prompted by seeing him doubling up with his crazy-eyed brother on last night's Question Time. While it was nice to see them savage Shirley Williams (rarely can anyone other than Ming have been so successful in giving the impression of vast wisdom while uttering thoughts of airy vacuity) Christopher Hitchens seemed drunk. Belligerently drunk. Yes, he smokes Rothmans. I used to consume a lot of those myself, although they are sort of airline pilot cigarettes, before I reverted to my Navy Cut. Now I do snuff. Brit's excellent point holds for Hitchens too.
ReplyDeleteThe Hitch has had some giddy highs though. He was brilliant on Iraq and shocking on Mother Theresa.
ReplyDeleteI'm betting when she finds Him, she'll dump Him and tell everyone He was a lousy shag. she'll be right this time on account I know he has a non-existent penis.
ReplyDeleteI never fancied her.
Burchill strikes me as one who is always on a quest for something and never likes the answer, if found.
