Nige No-Link

On a day of dreary and depressing news, I've been trying (and of course failing) to create a link to an undoubted Good News story - the bumper honey harvest in Britain, despite dire prognostications and unfortunate bee-related developments elsewhere in the world. It's on Telegraph Online, and no doubt in the paper and elsewhere. Honey, however, has also made an appearance on the government food fascists' list of Bad Foods that will turn Our Kids into immobile lardbuckets. Also on the list are olive oil, Marmite and cheese. Has the world gone mad? Well yes, of course.

  1. Probably stating the bleeding obvious here, Nige, but I'm guessing that to create a link in a post you just need to add the relevant html?

So, to make this appear as a link, use the following, but delete the spaces between the '<' and the 'a' at the start and end (which I've added so it doesn't just turn into a link):

    < a href="http://tinyurl.com/2wjqev">to make this appear as a link< /a>.

You just add the url you want and the text you wish to be highlighted as the link.

  2. Honey and olive oil are on the "bad" list ?

That's rather thick - honey and olive oil are among the healthiest of sweeteners and oils.

  3. Being nice to Nigel - here is the link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2007/05/07/eabees07.xml

Of course, as a bad food the FSA refers to high fat, sugar or salt in relation to 100g portions. Has anyone ever tried to eat that much honey that isn't called Pooh and is stuck in a rabbit hole?

  4. Creating links an esoteric art beyond my powers also till now, so this is perhaps my big chance, Johnny. Your tongue won't be torn out for having violated the secrets of the guild, I hope? Though I've been down this road before and the magic HTML spell failed to work its...emmm...magic, so I can't say I'm filled with jaunty optimism. Here goes

  7. What a community of helpers for Nigel! Johnny, it's just like World of Warcraft -- altruism of the bystanders watching Nige on his quest and trying to aid him.

Vis-a-vis honey, I could swear I recently read an article about Asian hornets decimating the French honey bee population (and thus posing a threat to bees all over Europe). They came over in some pottery from China, apparently. Their m.o. is to get into the bees' hive, kill all the drones, dismember 'em, turn their bodies into easy-to-eat sludge.

Beekeepers are flipping out, trying to make the hive openings smaller to keep the hornets out, etc. They need Sherlock Holmes; he knew a thing or two about apiaries.

I think the English kids better eat up the honey while it exists....

  8. Congrats, Andrew - as Obi-Wan would say, you've taken your first step into a larger world.

And excellent point, Susan. Truly, the geeks shall inherit the Earth.

  10. Nige. Be heroic. Why struggle to fill the neat, dapper, er, small shoes of the master when what we really need to see are your own own fine, fabulous, flipping enormous flappers? We've been treated to the heavily disguised hooter. Please, please. Show us your feet.

  11. I think I've lost the magic touch so I'll hazard another effort at the HTML stuff.
