I've Heard of Dutch Blinds, But...
My absence from Nigecorp having turned much of my brain to mush, I've been occupying myself with such undemanding yet strangely satisfying pursuits as weeding out my 'library'. Lugging yet another bag of redundant books to the charity shop just now, I glanced in the window of a nearby evangelical bookshop and saw a book by a bestselling (we are told) God-botherer with the glorious name of... Dutch Sheets. This gave me a good laugh (it does sound like the punchline to a dubious joke) - and put me in mind of my all-time favourite ridiculous name. You'll find it in the answer to the second letter here.

[sigh] Nige, Nige, Nige.[sigh] Taking used books to the charity shop is so 2oth century. Everyone sells their used books on Amazon or Ebay these days. Untold riches are yours to be had, Nige! Get with it man!
ReplyDeleteI know, I know, but I just couldn't handle all that packing and posting out. Sometimes, though, I dream of a future of eBay trading, blogging and walking around in slippers muttering to myself. It may not be that far away...
ReplyDeleteha ha, almost as good as Dutch Kapps. Not to mention Claude Nobs (but I believe he is Swiss). what's a Dutch Blind? I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteah, we'd call them awnings around here. Dutch has the look of a detoxed Ricky Gervais about him. And he's a Prayer Warrior! where do you find them?
ReplyDeleteAre books worth the money, the trouble? You got me wondering just now - people seem to go to extraordinary lengths to get rid of them. what, you only use them the once I suppose. Not like records or clothes and thing.
My favourite name is that of the 19th century English ornithologist, Sir Leighton Buzzard (whose life, somewhat surprisingly, is still to appear on wikipedia).
ReplyDeleteWasn't Jack Aubrey's steward called Preserved Killick? Those are books I have read over and over again and would no more get rid of them than cut off my leg.
ReplyDeleteI do think Americans do silly names extremely well - I was once rendered speechless by a US customer who introduced himself as Wayne C. Pillow III.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Dutch Sheets comrades in prayer, Rick Joyner & Chuck Pierce. A sentence seems to suggest itself:
ReplyDeleteChuck pierces them, Rick joins them and Dutch sheets them out. On that appalling note, I draw your attention to a short post about butterflies which as a friend to said creatures, you might find consoling, Nige.
Thanks for that, Andrew - a fine defence of the innnocently flapping butterfly against a disgraceful canard. Glad someone's speaking up for them.
ReplyDeleteMind you, those silverwashed fritillaries can kick up quite a storm...
And all this puts me in mind of the short-lived Cambridge University New Testament Society (think about it...)
ReplyDeleteOh and I forgot to mention that the Dutch Sheets opus that caught my eye was titled Roll Away Your Stone. Fantastic.
ReplyDeletethat's really a fantastic post ! ! added to my favourite blogs list..
