Reverse over the Body
Yesterday I was told by a lawyer friend that, should I happen to hit a young person while driving, I should try and reverse over the body. This would ensure the young person was dead. I should do this because a handicapped young person might result in a massive legal settlement whereas a dead one would merely involve a few thousand for the parents. It must be amazing being a lawyer.

Perhaps he's a lawyer for an insurance company.

ReplyDeleteThis was rumored to be common knowledge and practice in Korea as late as the early '80's.
ReplyDeleteYou MUST read Andre Dubus's "A Father's Story," the best tale ever written about this kind of accident. And he was a very Catholic fellow as well as an excellent prose stylist: You'll dig it, I am sure. (His story, by the way, foreshadowed a terrible event in his own life when he was hit on the Massachusetts Turnpike while trying to help two stranded motorists. A tough-guy ex-Marine, he lost one leg totally and the use of the other. But that's another story.)
