Remember Fluoride?

Here's a blast from the past and no mistake. I guess the pressure of coming up with 'ideas' and 'initiatives' every day was bound to drive our desperate 'government' back into the 80s sooner or later - but really, fluoride in the water?! Don't tell me we're going to have a 'national debate' on this as well. I don't know about you, but all these national debates are really taking it out of me...

  1. Tell me about it... Ivan Lawrence was my local MP when I was at home.... he was the one who filibustered against fluoride and went on about it allthe time in the eighties...

  2. There's something I dimly remember about the ingestion of fluorine (which is a poison) that prevents the body taking up iodine (and other beneficial elements). That's why there are thyroid problems in certain parts of Derbyshire where the water naturally contains high levels of fluorine.
I am instinctively against anything this (or any other government) says is good for our health. And I am particularly suspicious if Postman Johnson tells me it's 'good for public health'.
The truth is probably that it's cheaper and easier to adulterate the water supply than to sort out the problems in NHS dentistry.
'National debate' is one of these weasel phrases that means the exact opposite of the impression the user tries to give. It is meant to absolve him from responsibility for the imposition of whatever thing is 'nationally debated'.

  4. Yes, I too am fed up with national debates. I wouldn't mind quite as much if they ever bloody well listened to us.

  6. They've had fluoride in the water around here for years and I'm perfectly normal.

  8. i happen to live about 10 minutes from where Madeley used to live in the North and i've been drinking fluoride for years without any ill effects. i am, if anything, considerably saner than the average human being, but then, of course, i'm not really human.
