Recipe of the Day: The Mivvi

My Tomatoes and Milk post inspired worldwide interest and a very handy recipe from Susan in Philadelphia. While mulling over this turn of events, I happened upon a Dave Barry post. This revealed that Donald Trump's new book is called Think Big and Kick Ass: In Business and in Life. Right, I thought, it's time to TB and KA, I shall try a recipe of the day on Thought Experiments. Unfortunately, being an instinctive, neo-Dadaist kind of cook, I have none. But, as a child, I used to pursue something called a Mivvi. This was a fruit lolly with ice cream inside. I assumed that, like so much else, Mivvis had gone the way of all flesh, but they haven't. In fact, here they are actually reviewed. Where, I wonder, did the strangely attractive name come from? It has such a pleasant fifties and Formica feel. Anyway, the reason this came up was my discovery of Waitrose's Fruit Splits. They are Mivvis in all but name and they are better than the Mivvis of my infancy. So the Recipe of the Day is this: remove a Waitrose Fruit Split from the freezer, unwrap and eat it.

  1. I'm not sure that 'Mivvis' would fly in this fruit-pulp swilling environment. Or the name on a ad execs lips. It just sounds radioactive, something handmade/bespoke for a tour De France pro'.
But, I do wonder will they eat the buddhist bullock of Wales, if so how and with what.

  2. I'm not sure I am familiar with that product, Vince, is it by Cadbury? You don't mean the Hindu bullock do you?

  3. Yes, that Hindu owned one. And he may well be a product by a Cadbury, surely some of them are farming.

  4. I remember the Cornish Mivvi - butter yellow ice cream surrounded in raspberry lolly ice. I imagine the name was thought up around the committee table like most nonsense brands - perhaps they meant it to sound italian which, let's be honest, is the best in the world and accept no substitutes!

Shambo. which for me is too much like sambo and shambles; portmanteau with scrambled shallots.

names! they're all made up aren't they?!

  5. regarding 'The Donald's' book entitled Think Big and Kick Ass, I can't help thinking of the wonderful Fry and Laurie song, 'There ain't but one way . . .' (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6riY-103vbc)

  6. 'Mivvi': it sounds a little Finnish. Though to be properly so it would have doubled vowels and be unpronouncable by anyone not raised on reindeer & tree bark. Change it to Miivi and hey presto, instant Finnish.

  7. God the Mivvi. That takes me back. Vanilla ice cream and hot choclate sauce at long vanished Chez Madame's off Victoria Street was wondrous in the 1950s too. Poor cow by the way.

  8. The Mivvi looks yummy. Alas, I don't think we have them here.

By the way, Bryan, I can't help you with halibut. With the exception of tuna casserole, I don't eat fish. Something about the smell, or perhaps the way it was forced on me every Friday in childhood. Bleh.

  9. I'm a little intrigue of what this recipe is!

But the way I see it, it's healthy, isn't it?
