On Ties
Well, I guess none of us saw this one coming, though, suddenly, it seems inevitable. It's a site that provides videos of women teaching men how to tie their ties. They start with the Full Windsor. This is a vulgar, showy knot. Personally, I use the much more discreet Half Windsor. I can't quite lower myself to the basic schoolboy knot. On the other hand, I only wear a tie about twice a month - the Lambeth Walk is my current favourite. I feel guilty about this. The world makes a little more sense when men wear ties.

Half Windsor is my choice as well. I prefer the discreet political message contained in the Nanny State myself. (I wear a tie about twice a year, unless someone I know dies.)
ReplyDeleteSmithfield and Full Windsor man, myself. Goes well with the pipe, sports jacket and mini-skirt.
ReplyDeleteyou should never do things by halves.
ReplyDeletebut
half the time, I don't wear a tie and for the other half I don't need to.
Well, and speaking as a daily tie wearer, it has to be said that no gentleman would tie a full Windsor, and I'm afraid that even a half Windsor is doubtful.
ReplyDeleteNo, for taste, discretion and style only the Four-in-Hand will do. OK, you can call that a schoolboy knot, but most schoolboys of my acquaintance seem to wear a triple full Windsor.
Saw LA Confidential last night - at one point the routinely homicidal Bud White (Russell Crowe) takes off his jacket and we see he's wearing a short-sleeved shirt & tie. This man kills about a dozen people in the course of the film.
ReplyDeleteRecusant, as a five-day-a-week tie wearer (at least when the nights draw in), I entirely agree that no gentleman need look beyond the four-in-hand in search of idle novelty.
ReplyDeleteElberry, two words: Andy Sipowicz. However, I wouldn't wear that combo myself.
I need the Windsor because my neck is larger and the Windsor fills up the space where the neck button is undone.
ReplyDeleteMe I'd like something smaller than the four in hand ideally, if such exists. Any ideas? No, not a bootlace tie, thanks - I am not, as far as I know, Texan...
