Good News

The nation seems to be coming to its senses at last about the London Olympics. Meanwhile, last night's Dispatches (Channel 4) raised some uncomfortable questions about 'Seb' Coe's finances and the total meaninglessness of the original budget figure. It's not too late to hand the whole thing back to Paris. Or give Beijing a second go.

  1. The Olympics, at least the summer ones, corrupt everybody except already-corrupted totalitarians and the Americans.

  2. Send them to Manchester, in lieu of a casino; it's not too late!

  3. It would be interesting to see what might happen if they gave the games to Warsaw. All building work in the UK would probably cease and we'd have to start flying in plumbers from Brazil or somewhere.

  4. I've never seen the appeal of watching people running really fast and chucking things into fields. Most of them are quite intelligent and come from good families, I believe. So, why don't they do something clever and entertaining instead?

  5. Couldn't agree more, Ian - and the running, jumping and chucking are the enteraining bit - the rest is even more tedious. They should bring back stuff like the standing jump (always a laugh), cricket , backward sprinting, naked wrestling (ladies only, liberally basted in olive oil), playing the lute and reciting Pindaric odes.

  6. Well, I heard old Seb Coe talk about encouraging new blood into the games. that's all very well and good but where is the egg and spoon, the sack and the three-legged race then? You know, is it any wonder he can't get the interest? I bet our youngsters feel slightly conned when they sign up to an athletics club only to find they've taken all the fun out of it.

  7. Forget about those people running fast or chucking things, Nige, and concentrate on the more important sports, like synchronized swimming.
