The Lighter Side of Foot and Mouth. 2.

The second funniest thing about the (short-lived) foot and mouth panic - after Gordon's cutting short his 'holiday' - is that the government's Chief Veterinary Officer shares her name with this cutie. Unless they are one and the same person - who knows? By the way, Surrey was still open yesterday.

  1. Was it Debbie who sang 'Surrey with the fringe on top' ?

  2. Dang, Johntyh, she surely did! Brilliant!
Puts me in mind of an Alan Whicker report from Rhodesia (when it still was). 'They call it Surrey in the sun,' he drawled. 'But it's a Surrey with the lunatic fringe on top.' There'll never be another.

  3. Nige, I think Debbie also sang 'Tammy'; Probably the name of her cat. Don't play it to Bryan.

Ah, the great Wicker. I remember as a lad being spellbound by one of his early Australian trips. He interviewed an old bushman who had (if I remember correctly) a very young aboriginal wife with the biggest frontal assets you would ever see. In talking about his love life, the old boy told Wicker "I have to be careful or she'll poke my eyes out!"

  4. I'm sorry, but "Surrey" was sung by Gordon McCrae to Shirley Jones. It's a man's song, so why would Debbie have sung it?

  5. Fair enough, Peter - think of it as a Thought Experiment.

  6. The amazing thing is that the chief vet of the US is called Catherine Zeta Jones.

  7. Peter, you're thinking about the film. Have you never seen Debbie's stage show? It's sponsored by DEFRA and I understand she sings several 'male' songs, including 'Surrey' and it's supposed to be very good.

  8. When I said I was spellbound by Alan Wicker I meant spellingbound. Sorry about the missed h Mr Whicker.

Well, there you go, I obviously failed that thought experiment.

BTW, did you know Peter Burnet sang "Ole Man River"? Just yesterday. In the shower. :-)

  10. Didn't know that, Peter, and I'm reluctant to advise that 'Ole Man River' is a girl's song.

  11. And, of course, the US President shares a name with the actor Martin Sheen.

  12. Bryan, is that the Sheen who's related to the owner of the furniture polish company. You know, the one who makes umpteen things clean?

  13. Why did you put holiday in quotation marks? Do you believe that Gordon "I don't use my family for publicity purposes" Brown decided to spend a week in one of Labour's constituencies with the narrowest majority for a reason other than rest and relaxation with his brood? What a cynic you are.

  14. just to say, I heard that and thought the same as you.
